Gordonstown Hill

In June 2009 Infinis received planning consent for a wind farm, to be known as Gordonstown Hill wind farm, at Gordonstown Hill, near Kirkton of Auchterless and approximately 9km south of Turriff, Aberdeenshire.

The development team was praised by the Planning Committee for the manner in which it had approached the local community and engaged with residents and councillors throughout the process. Gordonstown Hill was selected as a suitable site as it has a number of attributes which allow for the development of a wind farm with minimal environmental effects. As part of the site selection process, feasibility studies were undertaken which indicated that Gordonstown Hill had excellent potential because of the exposed nature of the site and its high wind speeds.

There are no environmental designations on the site, which currently comprises agricultural farmland owned by three landowners.

The final layout is for five turbines with a blade tip height of up to 100m. Depending on turbine choice, the generation capacity could be up to 12.5MW. It is estimated that this could generate the equivalent of the annual average electricity use of around 6,500 UK households, based on an average capacity factor of 26.9%*.

* This calculation is based on the UK average capacity factor of 26.9% (taken from Table 7.4 in the Digest of UK Energy Statistics 2010, DUKES, 2010, for data in 2009) and an average UK household electricity consumption in 2009 of 4,423kWh (Digest of UK Energy Statistics 2010) which leads to a calculation of the equivalent electricity consumption of 6,500 households (rounded down to the nearest 500 households). It should be noted that the equivalent household electricity consumption calculated will vary depending on site wind speeds and actual household electricity consumption. Download the Digest of UK Energy Statistics 2010 - PDF 6.8MB.
